Postcards from the Present and the Future
I began this ongoing project, POSTCARDS FROM THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE in 2022. I have currently completed 84 altered postcards, and I am adding more. I was was searching for a way to explore my increasing concerns about the climate crisis, infrastructure fragility, and the erosion of our American democracy. I make alterations on found postcards by repainting parts of them with gouache. I reframe the meanings of statues and monuments, and adjust images of historic buildings, bridges, dams, highways, and scenic places to shift the focus away from benign or sentimental pictures to acknowledgments about an endangered world. I also investigate the relationship between the miniature and the monumental and manipulate small souvenirs to address overwhelming issues.
