Judith G. Levy began her ongoing project, POSTCARDS FROM THE PRESENT AND THE FUTURE in 2021. She was searching for a way to explore her increasing concerns about the climate crisis, infrastructure fragility, and the erosion of the American democracy. Levy alters found postcards by repainting parts of them with gouache. She reframes the meanings of statues and monuments, and adjusts images of historic buildings, bridges, dams, highways, and scenic places to shift the focus away from sentimental pictures to acknowledgments about an endangered world.
