Premonition Point, Ozark, Calif.
Premonition Point, Ozark, Calif.

23 inches x 60 inches

As settlers traveled from Missouri to California they often named new towns after their old homes. In my mind, Premonition Point is one of the first places they reached, when they got close to the coast. It was also the site of some key battles between the Spanish colonial empire and the Muwekma-Ohlone People who lived in the area. Essentially, the Spanish forced the indigenous people to give up their land, and then the United States went to war with Spain and took the land from them. The boat, representing the past, is a traditional Missouri lake boat, and the bridge is the Golden Gate, representing the future. However this future does not include the restoration of land to the indigenous populations.
