Sappho Beach, Glory, Kansas
Sappho Beach, Glory, Kansas
archival digital print
23 inches x 60 inches

I was inspired to create this postcard by the increasing hostile environment for LGBTQ people in Kansas. Very few towns or cities and cities offer protection against hate crimes or discrimination. After moving to Kansas, I was struck by how this state was, at one time, the seat of the Populist movement and far more committed to progressive politics then it is today. Of course Kansas isn't the only place in the United States where LGBTQI citizens struggle for civil rights, but it is also a state that is hostile to immigrants, and has made it difficult for women to get abortions. This imaginary landscape depicts a history and a place that is not the reality of Kansas today.
