Everyone Loves A Parade
2008
performance/video
Everyone Loves a Parade, a performance and video work, was created by the artist team Silevy for On Procession, an art parade, sponsored by the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The event took place in Indianapolis in April, 2008.

This work was selected by curator Rebecca Uchill for the On Procession exhibition at The Indianapolis Museum of Art and was included in the exhibition catalogue.

Everyone Loves a Parade is based on the work of Walter Lippmann, a journalist, media critic and philosopher. In his book "Public Opinion", Lippmann wrote that citizens view the world through stereotypes that led them to believe partial truths. He stated that "pictures" in peoples' "heads" compromised their ability to engage in critical thinking and obtain an accurate sense of the past.

Everyone Loves a Parade, suggests that military images of prowess and glory that we hold in our own heads, interfere with our ability to understand the true horrors and complexity of war. In our performance/video we created our own military parade comprised of extensive historical footage, that we played on portable video players that we carried on our chests in packs that we designed. These videos from around the world are accompanied by the Washington Post, a traditional American military march. By surrounding ourselves with iconic military imagery and music, we underscored Lippmann's notion that the public's understanding of the past is often compromised by particular set of ideas that creates a limited comprehension of history.
