This video was part of a performance piece. It was displayed in a front-pack carrier that was worn by the two-person artist team, Silevy, as we marched in On Procession, an Indianapolis Museum of Art art parade. The parade was choreographed by Fritz Haeg and curated by Rebecca Uchill. Everyone Loves a Parade was inspired by the work of Walter Lippmann. In his book, Public Opinion, Lippmann wrote a chapter "The World Outside and the Pictures in our Heads" in which he discusses the nature of preconceived ideas and the relationship between concepts and actual experiences. He proposes that most of us understand very little about the past, because we did not actually experience it. We are tempted to emphasize the most appealing aspects of history. Silevy took this idea and applied it to the concept of militarism and war. We created a video comprised of historical footage of military parades from all over the world to demonstrate that the glorification of war is an example of the way horror and tragedy become minimized as we compartmentalize events.
